About the service:

“Kein Täter werden” is aimed at people with a sexual interest in children. It offers a confidential protected framework and a concept based on acceptance. Together with clients they offer to work out ways to live a legally compliant and satisfied life.
“Kein Täter werden” began in 2005 as a pilot project at the Institute of Sexology and Sexual Medicine at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin in Berlin and has since been established throughout Germany. There are 13 locations countrywide and an online help service Troubled Desire.

Who is this service for?

“Kein Täter werden” is a program for people who have never committed a sexual offence against a child or teenager but are afraid they might. It is also for people who have already committed such an offence but have not been discovered by the police or other authorities. In addition, it supports people who have been charged or convicted for a sexual offence against a child or teenager, have completed their sentence, and are now worried about reoffending. To take part in the program, a person must understand that sexual acts involving children or young teenagers is a serious problem. They must also be willing to get help and take part in therapy voluntarily.

How can the service be accessed?

The services can be reached by email and phone. It is recommended to contact the most convenient location directly.

To what extent is the service anonymous?

Therapists are subject to therapeutic confidentiality regarding all past cases of child sexual abuse that come to their attention in the course of their therapeutic work (Section 203 of the German Criminal Code). Therapeutic confidentiality is a foundation for the project’s preventive approach. This allows even someone seeking help who is not known to the justice system to be offered therapeutic help to prevent (repeated) assaults. Otherwise, these people would remain unavailable for therapy. In cases of acute danger to self or others, the well-being of the person at risk takes priority. In this case, the therapists work with the participant to develop steps to end the acute danger.
